What the drying actually depends on
Drywall doesn't dry on a fixed timer. Restoration pros following the industry standard (IICRC S500) try to get drying equipment running within the first 24 hours — typically LGR dehumidifiers paired with air movers placed about one per 12–16 feet of wall. Underpowering the job is the most common mistake, and it stretches drying out and invites secondary damage. What decides days vs. months comes down to four things:
- →Airflow through the cavity. Moving air is what carries moisture out. No airflow, no drying.
- →Whether water can drain. If water pools at the bottom of the wall, it keeps re-wetting everything above it.
- →How dirty the water is. Flood water is Category 3 ("black water") under S500 — the most contaminated class, which raises the bar on what has to be removed.
- →Heat and humidity. Warm, humid, still air locks moisture in; dry moving air pulls it out.
The clock that really matters: the mold window
Drying time isn't just about convenience — it's a race against mold. Per the EPA, mold generally won't grow if wet materials are dried within 24–48 hours. Miss that window and the picture changes fast:
Spores absorb the moisture and begin to germinate. Nothing visible yet.
Growth is underway inside the wall. This is the line between a cleanup and a remediation.
Colonies become visible — dark or greenish-black spots. Summer heat and humidity speed this up.
So "how long does drywall take to dry" is really two questions. Can you dry the surface? Usually, yes. Can you dry the cavity before mold takes hold in there? That's where most walls fail — because of how they're built.
Why a sealed wall misses the window
In a standard wall, the drywall runs down flush against the base plate and the floor. The cavity behind it is closed off at the bottom. On a dry day that's fine. The moment water gets in, gravity pulls it to the bottom — where it has nowhere to drain and no air can reach it. The surface dries, a moisture meter still reads soaked inside, and the trapped pocket becomes the perfect place for mold. (Remember: under ~1% moisture is dry, and anything over ~17% means that drywall is coming out.)
