It's one of the most frustrating things about water damage: everything looks handled, and weeks later there's a smell, a stain, or mold creeping out of a seam. The reason is almost always the same — a standard wall is built in a way that traps water exactly where you can't get to it.
A wall is basically a sealed box
Picture the bottom of a normal wall. The drywall runs straight down and sits flush against the base plate and the floor. The cavity behind it — the space between the studs — is closed off at the bottom. Fine on a dry day. A problem the instant water gets in.
Water pools at the base with no way out
When flood water enters the cavity, gravity pulls it to the bottom. But the bottom is sealed. The water has nowhere to drain, so it sits against the base plate, the bottom of the studs, and the back of the drywall — slowly wicking upward and keeping everything above it damp.
No airflow means no drying
Drying needs moving air to carry moisture away. A closed cavity has none. Your fans move air across the room, but they can't reach the sealed pocket where the water actually is. So the wall gives up moisture at a crawl — weeks, sometimes three to four months — and the whole time, that damp, dark, still cavity is the ideal place for mold and rot to take hold.
And the clock is short. The EPA notes mold generally won't grow if materials dry within 24–48 hours. A sealed cavity almost never dries that fast — which is exactly why hidden mold is so common after a flood.
Why "it looks dry" fools everyone
The drywall surface dries long before the cavity does. People touch the wall, feel dry paint, and call it done. A moisture meter says otherwise: dry drywall reads under ~1%, and anything above ~17% means it's compromised and has to come out. That gap between "looks dry" and "is dry" is where the surprise mold problems and the second round of repairs come from.
The fix: give the wall a way to drain and breathe
The wall doesn't stay wet because drywall can't dry. It stays wet because it was built with no exit for water and no path for air. Change that, and the whole equation flips.
