Why speed matters
Per the EPA, mold generally won't grow if wet materials are dried within 24–48 hours. Restoration pros following IICRC S500 aim to have drying equipment running inside the first 24. The faster the cavity dries, the more wall you keep.

Stop the source and extract standing water
Find the leak or wait for flood water to recede, then shut it off. Pump or vac out standing water. Until the source is handled and the water's gone, nothing else holds. If it's flood water, treat it as Category 3 ("black water") — contaminated, and handled accordingly.

Open the wall so the cavity can drain and breathe
A sealed wall can't dry. Pull the baseboard to expose the bottom of the cavity. Crews often drill weep holes near the base or remove a strip of drywall so water can drain and air can get in. The whole goal: give the trapped water a way out.

Move air across the wall and run a dehumidifier
Aim air movers along the wall surface — the S500 rule of thumb is about one air mover per 12–16 feet of wall — and pair them with an LGR dehumidifier to pull moisture out of the air. Keep it running for days, not hours. Under-powering the job is the most common reason walls don't dry in time.

Measure moisture — don't guess
A wall that feels dry on the surface is often still soaked inside. Use a moisture meter on the drywall and in the cavity. Dry drywall reads under ~1%; above ~17% it's compromised and usually has to be replaced. Call it dry only when it's within ~10% of undamaged drywall elsewhere in the home.

Rebuild so the wall can dry next time
This is the step almost everyone skips — and it's the one that decides whether you do this all again next storm.
The mistake that traps moisture for months
The most common error is closing the wall back up exactly the way it was: drywall sealed flush to the floor, baseboard back on, no path for water to escape. That rebuilds the same trap that caused the slow dry-out in the first place. The next time water gets in — and in a flood-prone home, there is a next time — you're right back to weeks of wet wall and a mold clock running.
