A wall that gets wet has a clock on it. Do the right things in the first 72 hours and you can beat mold and save the drywall. Here's exactly what to do — hour by hour.

DAY 1

First 24 hours — the mold clock

Mold can start in 24–48 hours. This is the window that decides how much you keep.

  • Stop the water at the source. Shut off the supply if it's a leak; keep floodwater from re-entering.
  • Stay safe around power. Don't touch wet outlets or switches until the power to that area is off or checked.
  • Photograph everything before you move or remove anything — for your insurance claim.
  • Pull the baseboards and open the base of the wall so the cavity can drain and breathe — trapped water is what keeps a wall wet.
  • Remove wet insulation. It holds water against the framing and slows everything down.
  • Set up airflow + a dehumidifier. Aim for cross-flow, roughly one fan per 12–16 ft of wall, running non-stop.
DAY 2

24–48 hours — stay ahead of mold

Keep the moisture moving out. Don't close anything up yet.

  • Run the dehumidifier around the clock and route or empty the drain so it never backs up.
  • Check moisture with a meter. Under ~1% is dry; 5–12% is a safe range; above ~17% the drywall likely comes out.
  • Watch for a musty smell or discoloration — the first signs mold is starting.
  • Leave the wall open. Don't insulate or re-hang drywall until the cavity reads dry.
DAY 3

48–72 hours — verify, then decide

Confirm it's actually dry inside — not just on the surface.

  • Re-check moisture at the base of each stud bay — the bottom of the cavity is where water hides longest.
  • Still wet? The cavity can't drain or ventilate. Open it up further or bring in a restoration pro before mold sets in.
  • Only rebuild once it's dry — and consider building it back so it can drain next time, instead of trapping water again.
