The man who got tired of rebuilding his walls

Ed Thompson flooded three times in 25 years on a Matlacha Isles canal. After tearing out his walls one too many times, he built a way to drain the water out instead.

In Southwest Florida, everyone knows the routine. A storm comes through, the water comes in — and the walls come out. Drywall gets cut, hauled to the curb, and replaced, only to do it all again the next time the Gulf decides to visit.

Ed Thompson got tired of it.

Three floods in 25 years

Ed came to Matlacha Isles 25 years ago to flip a house. He never left. "I came here 25 years ago to flip a house and I'm still living in it," he says — which tells you how much he loves living on the water. But life on a canal has a downside: his home has taken on floodwater three separate times.

Each time meant the same brutal cleanup — tearing out soaked drywall, fighting mold and mildew, and rebuilding. "Once the mold and mildew gets in there," Ed says, "it's stuck."

The thing he couldn't stop noticing

After the third round, Ed started paying attention to why the walls held water so badly. The answer was in how every wall is built. "When walls are built, the drywall goes down to the floor," he explains. "So this is all covered. It's a closed cavity, and it will retain water for — could be days, could be weeks, could be months."

The flood wasn't really the problem. The trapped water was. And nothing about a standard wall gave it a way out.

"I thought, something's got to be better," Ed says. So he started working on it.

What he came up with

He calls them Rock Bloks — perforated plastic pieces that fasten to the base of each wall stud, behind the baseboard. The lattice creates open channels right where water normally gets trapped. "It's plastic, so it won't hold water," Ed says, "and there's channels that divert the water away. So nothing is going to be capable of holding any water inside."

The effect is simple: when the floodwater recedes, the wall drains with it. "As soon as the water's out of your house," Ed says, "it will be out of your walls also." Instead of weeks of trapped moisture and a guaranteed mold problem, the wall drains and dries — and most of it stays right where it is.
